From Gate to Verse: Echoes of History and Poetry

Ancient Pylons - IV century BC

As we begin our journey into the Old Town, we ponder the mystery of the winged lion holding a Bible that awaits us at the main entrance — a story we'll uncover at the end of our tour. Continuing along, we pass the ruins of a Venetian watchtower, still standing as a testament to the strength and dignity of the Republic's presence in the region. Winding through narrow, charming streets, we arrive at the Square of Poets, where echoes of epic poems and stories once told still linger in the air.

You probably haven't seen a 2,400 years old monument inside an outlet store, well that's about to change. Here lie the ancient stone foundations of Budva's main gate from Greek period, known as Pylons. THese enduring structures have withstood the test of time, silently preserving the resilience and grandeur of the ancient city.

Standing in the heart of Budva's Old Town, the Church of St. John the Baptist invites you to reflect on centuries of history layered beneath your feet. Long before the church was built, the very spot where we will be standing once housed Roman baths, offering a glimpse into the town's ancient past. Today, the church stands as a symbol of Budva's enduring spirit. Its prominent bell tower, added in the 19th century, rises above the town's rooftops, serving as a beacon for both locals and visitors. Inside, the atmosphere is serene, highlighted by a vibrant mosaic behind the altar. This artwork, depicting Saint John the Baptist delivering a sermon, adds a splash of color and artistry to the sacred space.

Church of Holy Trinity - XIX century AD

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a beautiful Orthodox church in Budva's Old Town, reflecting the predominant religion in Montenegro. Built in the early 19th century, its alternating red and white stone facade and three-bell tower are distinctive features. Above the entrance, a mosaic depicting the Holy Trinity welcomes visitors. Inside, the richly decorated iconostasis, painted by Greek artist Naum Zetiri from the island of Milos, showcases exquisite artistry. This active place of worship offers a serene atmosphere and a glimpse into the region's spiritual heritage.

The Church of St. Sabbas the Sanctified, a modest Romanesque structure from the 12th century, stands near Budva's Citadel. Historically, it served both Catholic and Orthodox communities, reflecting a period of religious coexistence. Today, while no longer active for worship, it remains a symbol of Budva's diverse spiritual heritage.

Church Santa Maria in Punta - IX century AD

Christian Bassilica - V century Ad

Perched on the southwestern edge of Budva's Old Town, the Church of Santa Maria in Punta is a timeless sentinel of the Adriatic. Founded in the 9th century by Benedictine monks, this modest stone chapel has witnessed centuries of spiritual devotion and cultural evolution. Its architecture is a harmonious blend of Romanesque solidity, Gothic elegance, and Baroque ornamentation, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped it over time. Though no longer serving as a place of worship, the church now hosts art exhibitions and classical concerts, allowing visitors to experience its serene ambiance and historical resonance. Santa Maria in Punta stands not just as a relic of the past, but as a living canvas of Budva's enduring heritage

Nestled within Budva’s Old Town, the remnants of a Christian basilica, still visible today, date all the way back to the 5th century. Pretty old, right? It’s the oldest sacred monument in the city. This ancient structure once served as both a spiritual sanctuary and a bustling community center. While time has reduced it to ruins, the basilica remains a silent witness to Budva's enduring legacy as a crossroads of faith, culture, and commerce.

Ruins of Villa Urbana - I century AD

bela isprekidana linija_edited.png

Clinging to the cliffs at the southern tip of Budva’s Old Town, the Citadel rises like a stone sentinel above the sea. Built during the Austro-Hungarian era, it was envisioned as the final bastion of defense — a fortress meant to withstand siege and storm alike. Its austere geometry and imposing presence still speak of the empire’s obsession with order, power, and perfection carved in stone. Yet the Citadel is not only a monument to military strategy. From its ramparts, the views stretch endlessly over the Adriatic and the labyrinth of Budva’s rooftops. Within, a quiet maritime library shelters traces of a seafaring past, while behind it, the ruins of the medieval church of Santa Maria in Castello sit gently against the ancient walls — a quiet reminder of Budva’s layered and living history.

Hidden away from the main streets of Budva's Old Town, beneath the wide crown of a solitary palm, lie the graceful remains of a Roman villa — a fragment of everyday luxury from nearly 2,000 years ago. Known today as Villa Urbana, this site evokes the quiet elegance of ancient coastal life. What truly sets it apart, however, is the floor it once held — a stunning mosaic now preserved in the city museum. Composed of tiny colored stones, it unfolds with images of sea creatures and mythic symbols, offering a glimpse into the refined taste of its long-vanished residents. Today, these fragments and their mosaics speak not of ruin, but of refinement, inviting us to imagine the lives once lived here, where art met architecture in quiet harmony by the sea.

You’ve been to the Vatican? Even if you have, I doubt you stood next to a bell this size. What’s it doing here, just outside the Old Town walls? A gift from another country? A piece of some grand forgotten structure? Let’s just say — the story is worth the wait.

Gradenigo tower - XV century AD

bela isprekidana linija_edited.png

Do you remember the lion at the main entrance? Well, the time has come to finally uncover the mystery behind him. This second lion, standing proud on the Gradenigo Tower — one of the key fortifications of the Old Town — might just hold the answers we’ve been looking for. But why is he here? What’s his true connection to the story of Budva? Now, let’s dive into that mystery. The tower itself was funded by the Gradenigo family, Venetian nobles who made sure this structure would stand tall for centuries.Gradenigo Tower is a reminder of the city's rich history, where every stone has its own story to tell.

Just in front of the modest Cekrdaković house stands a small, timeworn altar — a survivor of the Roman presence in Budva. Once used for ritual offerings to the gods, this stone fragment reminds us that everyday life in ancient times pulsed with ceremony and reverence. It emerged from beneath the earth in the wake of a powerful earthquake, when shifting ground revealed what centuries had concealed. Rather than being moved to a distant museum, it was placed in situ — left exactly where it was found — allowing the street itself to preserve a trace of the city’s ancient soul.
